New Zealanders are generous by nature and will want to assist with the response to the earthquake and tsunami which hit Samoa and parts of the wider Pacific region on 30 September 2009.

Giving a cash donation – no matter what size – is really the best sort of assistance New Zealanders can provide at this time.

Many New Zealand based organisations will respond to the disaster. They will urgently need money for their work.

Several New Zealand based appeals have been established in response to the earthquake and tsunami, information on each of these is listed below.

NZAID will make information about any other specific appeals publicly available once they are established.

Adventist Development and Relief Agency New Zealand (ADRA)

ADRA New Zealand has established a specific appeal for the Pacific emergency. You can make a donation by:

  • calling the ADRA call centre on 0800 4999 111
  • making a secure donation online at the ADRA New Zealand website. Be sure to tick the box that specifies your donation will be for the ‘Emergency Fund'.

ANZ Banking Group

ANZ Bank has set up an appeal to assist the families impacted by the earthquake and tsunami in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga. You can make a donation by:

  • visiting any ANZ Bank branch throughout New Zealand and telling the bank teller you would like to make a donation to the ANZ Samoa Appeal Fund
  • making a direct debit into the Appeal Account. The account number is 01 1839 0143546 00.

All proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross to assist with the disaster response in the affected areas.

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is currently accepting donations to help towards tsunami relief in the Pacific. You can make a donation by:

  • making a secure online donation at Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand's website. Be sure to tick the box that specifies that you would like your donation to support the Pacific tsunami appeal.

The Christian World Service has launched an appeal for funds to assist with long-term support and reconstruction plans in American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga. You can make a donation by:

Kiwibank donations to Red Cross

Kiwibank have established an account for donations towards the relief effort in Samoa. All funds will be paid to the Red Cross. You can make a donation by visiting any Kiwibank branch or using internet banking.

Manukau City Council

Manukau City Council are accepting donations that will go towards helping the relief effort in Samoa. You can make a donation by:

  • visiting a Bank of New Zealand Branch and depositing a donation. The account name is the 'Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund' and the account number is 02 0191 0303070 00
  • using internet banking. The account name is the 'Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund' and the account number is 02 0191 0303070 00

Mercury Energy customers

Mercury Energy customers can donate to help the Samoan disaster relief:

  • online at www.mercury.co.nz,
  • by texting the word Samoa followed by the amount you wish to pledge and your Mercury Energy account number to 515
    (for example: text 'Samoa 20 John 012345678')
  • or by calling 0800 10 18 10 between 7.30am and 9.00 pm Monday to Friday and 8.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturday.


New Zealand Red Cross

The New Zealand Red Cross has launched an appeal for the Samoa tsunami relief project. You can make a donation by:

Oxfam New Zealand is accepting donations for their rapid response emergency fund. You can make a donation by:

The Pacific Cooperation Foundation has set up a tsunami relief fund. You can make a donation to the relief fund at any

All of the proceeds will go to the Samoan Government.

For both donation methods you will need to specify that you would like your donation to go towards the Samoa Relief Appeal.

A trust account has been established for the Tsunami Samoa 09 Funds. You can make a donation to the trust account by direct debit. The account number is 01 1837 0026899 000. The trust account is set up at the ANZ Sylvia Park Branch.


UNICEF – the United Nations Children's Fund

UNICEF New Zealand has launched an appeal to provide aid to the people of Samoa and Tonga following the tsunami that swept the island nations. You can make a donation by:

  • visiting the UNICEF website and making a secure online donation.

Wanganui District Council

Wanganui District Council have launched an appeal to help victims of the Samoa crisis. The official appeal day is October 16 2009, volunteers will be collecting from 10.00am - 3.00pm in malls and along Victoria Avenue in Wanganui. Collectors will also be at the Wanganui vs Poverty Bay rugby match on October 17. You can also make a donation via a National Bank account - account number 01 0790 0188908 51. For more information you can contact the Council on (06) 349 0001.


World Vision New Zealand

World Vision New Zealand is accepting donations for the Pacific relief effort. You can make a donation by:

  • making a credit card donation using their online form. World Vision uses a Secure Sockets Layer connection to administer all online transactions
  • phoning 0900 4 HOPE (0900 4 4673) to make an automatic $30 donation that will be added to your phone bill
  • making a payment via internet banking. The account number is 06 0101 0323407 009.
  • sending a cheque (payable to World Vision New Zealand) to World Vision New Zealand, Private Bag 92078, Auckland 1142. On the back of the cheque specify that you would like the donation to go towards the Pacific relief effort.

World Vision have now sent some people to work on the ground in Samoa.
