NZAID is providing funding from the Trade and Development Programme to the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) programme in Cambodia.
This programme has two distinct parts. The first is the 'Better Factories' arm. This aims to improve compliance with the Cambodian Government's labour rights. ILO staff visit factories look at issues such as freedom of association, child labour and occupational safety and health. The results of these visits are linked to international buyers such as GAP, who can then make informed decisions to support factories with good labour conditions.
The second arm is the dispute resolution and arbitration programme. Addressing this area of conflict aims to reduce the number of often-violent strikes and other disagreements between employers and unions (particularly in the garments industry).
