International Garments Training Centre (IGTC)

The IGTC represents local and international companies based in Viet Nam. It was set up in response to the end of the quota system that inhibited developing country trade in garments and textiles. Countries like India and China are already well placed to respond to the end of this system. However without assistance, Viet Nam risks being left out of the opportunity to increase exports. The effects of this could be catastrophic as 1.6 - 1.8 million people in Viet Nam are employed in the garment and textile industry. Missing the boat on this issue could see a huge increase in poverty levels as people lose their jobs.

NZAID is supporting the IGTC's training programme. This programme aims to improve the skills of Vietnamese garments exporters in fulfilling the more lucrative type of contracts. Training in corporate social responsibility - including labour rights, gender equity and environmental sustainability components - have also been integrated into the programme.
