Research has shown that small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are important catalysts for economic development that benefits the poor. NZAID is providing funding to the Mekong Private Sector Development Facility (MPDF) to promote these types of enterprises in the following countries:
MPDF helps associations in labour-intensive sectors such as foodstuffs, garments and footwear to improve their organisational capabilities and technical know-how. The Facility also assists grassroots businesses to become self-sustaining.
For example, MPDF's programmes include support to a Bank Training Centre (BTC) in Vietnam. The BTC was established by a number of local Vietnamese banks with advice from MPDF. Training is provided to bank staff to improve their understanding and servicing of the SME sector.
