Non-government organisations and the response to the Boxing Day Tsunami

Public donations raised by disaster relief and development non-government organisations (NGOs) and community groups in New Zealand topped $24 million by 2005.

As part of the New Zealand Government’s overall $68 million response to the tsunami, $19 million was allocated to match dollar for dollar funds raised through accredited organisations.

By early 2005, all this funding had been allocated to NGOs and community groups working with survivors of the Asian Tsunami.

An initial $5 million in matching funds was allocated to 25 groups in mid-January 2005. A second round in February disbursed a further $3.9 million to 22 agencies and community organisations, and at the conclusion of the final round 49 NGOs and community organisations had received funding from the matching funds scheme.
