Cambodia : Traffic Safety Education

The goal of this project is to reduce the number of people killed and injured on Cambodia 's roads. The grantee, in partnership with Handicap Belgium, aims to achieve this by increasing the road safety knowledge and skills of students in Grades 7-9 in four provinces in Cambodia; to increase the quantity and quality of road safety materials to support the road safety education; and to increase the quantity and improve the quality of the teaching of RSE to students.

Cambodia : Local Resources for Local Roads

By establishing cost effective methods of pavement construction and by preparing standards, guidelines and capacity building measures which support the adoption of these methods this project, in partnership with the National Roading Board, aims to provide a reliable, cost effective infrastructure to allow the development of sustained livelihoods as a mainstay in the economy of rural Cambodia. Higher-strength pavements which deteriorate less after rains will decrease vehicle operating costs, supporting rural incomes.

China : Improve Rural Incomes of Karst Mountain Guizhou Communities

The grantee, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture Guizhou (DOA), aims to improve the rural incomes of Karst Mountain Guizhou communities through improving the life-time productivity of young stock and developing extension and educational capacity to ensure sustainability.

Nepal : Developing Sustainable Cereal and Legume Fodder Systems

This project aims, in partnership with the Nepal Agriculture Research Council (NARC) and the Department of Livestock (DLS), to facilitate economic growth and create on-farm employment opportunities by applying proven technologies generated by NARC and DLS researchers. The beneficiaries will be resource-poor smallholder farmers, who will be trained to grow high quality fodder on their own land, utilising bare land left between summer grain crops to improve milk production, household incomes and overall lifestyles while reducing the workloads of the women farmers who do the majority of the animal husbandry work.

Indonesia : Biogas for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods

The grantee, in partnership with Lembaga Tumbuh Alami, plans to identify the optimum number and options for the type, size and locations of biogas digesters to ensure that rice growing communities in the Kerinci Valley have maximum exposure to biogas technology, that biogas feedstock is available in sufficient quantities, and local government agencies are able to develop the necessary expertise to provide training and support to communities with biogas plants. Options for biogas digester design and for ownership and management arrangement will be identified. Analysis of environmental impact and preliminary training needs will also be prepared.

Lao : Developing New Opportunities for Lao Coffee Farmers

The grantee, in partnership with the Jhai Coffee Farmers Co-operative, aims to increase the income generating capacity of smallholder coffee farming households in the Bolovens Plateau by improving the quality of their coffee through proven and affordable processing technology. The Co-operative will be assisted in building a sustainable business base and will be supported in promoting and marketing the enhanced product around the world.

Timor Lest e: Eye Health for Timor Leste

This project partners with the Ministry of Health, with the aim of providing sustainable eye health for all in Timor Leste through building the capability of the Ministry of Health's Eye Health Unit to implement the National Eye Health Strategy. The project objectives are to build management capability of eye care personnel in Timor Leste, to develop a policy framework for eye care and to implement the policy so the population can benefit from an improved quality of eye care services. A target has been set to improve standards of eye care by 80% by 2010, with increased service in rural areas and equal utilisation of services by men and women.

Vietnam : New Zealand Cooperation for Land Administration Programme Human Resources Development

Landzone, in partnership with the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), plans to build HR capabilities within Vietnam 's Land Administration System (LAS). Key areas requiring support are the completion of the cadastral record system, land use certification issuance, establishment of a land information system, Land Code development, and completion of the land use planning system and land finance system.

Viet Nam : Tsunami Hazard Risk and Preparedness Assessment

In association with AC Consulting Services, the grantee will design and implement a project plan to strengthen the capacity of Vietnamese scientists to undertake tsunami hazard and risk assessments and to prepare mitigation strategies. Scientists at the Institute of Geophysics will be assisted in the proposed development of an earthquake information and tsunami early warning system ( VieNet GeoNet ).

Cambodia : Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Management

This project aims to contribute to sustainable health and livelihood improvement for rural communities in Cambodia by enhancing and supporting the developmental impact of the existing World Vision Cambodia (WVC) Area Development Programme. Technical water and sanitation skills transfer and information sharing will be integral to the assignment that aims to improve the capability of WVC to provide high quality rural water supply and sanitation interventions in rural villages.

Indonesia : Malaria Control in Mentawai Islands

This project aims to significantly and sustainably improve the health and socio-economic development of the Mentawai people. Providing community-based governance elements of a sustainable and self-reliant health programme that reduces mortality and morbidity due to targeted diseases and that provides the infrastructure and capacity for developing and implementing other community-led health care initiatives.

Indonesia : HIV Prevention and Support Programmes

The goal of this assignment is to reduce community vulnerability to, and the impact of, HIV in the Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) Province by strengthening the capacity of local NGO's in NTB to respond to the emerging HIV epidemic; increasing the access to vulnerable groups to quality HIV prevention, care and support activities and by facilitating and supporting increased collaboration between NGO's, the Provincial AIDS Commission and other government agencies.

Myanmar : Smallholder Irrigation for Livelihoods Initiative

The goal of this assignment is to increase incomes and reduce the vulnerability of poor rural households across Myanmar , by combining innovative and useful small-plot irrigation technologies (such as treadle pump and micro-drip) with low-cost production and private sector distribution that assures widespread access and impact. The design of this initiative emerged from six months of successful pilot activities that were supported in part by the NZAID HOMF in Bangkok , Thailand .

Pakistan : Landhi Fertiliser and Energy Initiative

This assignment aims to demonstrate a waste to energy and fertiliser process by treating cattle dung, creating gas and converting to electricity thereby creating saleable by-produce including bagged, dry manure. The fertiliser and energy enterprise aims to improve the economic and environmental conditions in the Landhi Cattle Colony and the ultimate aim is to produce data for the Asian Development Bank is to plan full-scale implementation. The partner is the Society for the Environmental and Economic Improvement of Cattle Colonies in Karachi (SEEICCK).

Philippines : Family-Centred Poverty Reduction Programme

This assignment aims to contribute to the long-term social goal of reducing poverty in the province of Negros Occidental by establishing a community-based family-centred poverty reduction programme in thirty-two barangays in the municipalities of Murcia and Toboso. This will be achieved mainly through a mix of micro-enterprise credit assistance; technical/vocational skills development training; employment assistance and formal labour market linkaging and empowerment of community institutions.

Philippines : Strengthening Improved access to Land and Resources in Visayas and Mindanao

The goal of this assignment is to increase access and control of land and all its resources by building capacity of local communities, enhancing organisational capability of farmers and farm workers and by providing support systems to peasants and other marginalized sectors. The realisation of these goals will be through capacity building of local communities, community-based NGOs and Partners Organisations on organisational and project development, paralegal formation, participatory governance (particularly local development planning and implementation), and local or national advocacy.

Philippines : Sustainable Tree Farming in Mindanao

In partnership with the Total Reforestation for Economic and Ecological Sustainability in Mindanao (TREES Mindanao), this assignment aims to improve the sustainable livelihoods of tree farming communities by increasing tree yields, wood quality and market opportunities. The assignment proposes to establish a federation (CaragaFed) as an effective and integrated forestry services organisation for small-scale tree farmers thereby reducing poverty amongst rural families in Caraga, Mindanao .

India : Cage Fish Culture

The goal of this assignment is to enhance the living standards and sustainable economic future of the poor inland fisher communities of Kerala, alleviating poverty through implementation of sustainable low-cost cage fish culture. Ten fisher self help groups will be formed as will a cage culture co-operative group. At least two women's self help groups will be engaged in farm feed production and three women representatives involved in the cooperative group established during the assignment. Ongoing technical and management support will be provided from the primary counterpart, the Kottapuram Integrated Development Society. The Government counterpart, the Kerala Fisheries Department in cage culture, will provide marketing and financial management.

Philippines : Pre-feasibility Studies on Energy Production from Biomass

The assignment intends to do a pre-feasibility study of providing a biomass-fired power plant in Panukulan, Polillo Island . This will involve producing a socio-economic survey (including results of community consultations, interviews and focus group discussions); a report of the identification of potential livelihood applications for use of the electricity generated from the biomass power plant; and a report on the resources available in order to generate power from the plant, including estimation of rice and coconut production, estimation of post harvest production, forecast of production trends, biomass properties and a preliminary transport and collection plan.

Bangladesh : Community Initiatives for Health and Development

This assignment involves the development of an integrated primary health care programme in the Moulvibazar Division of Bangladesh, focussing on the establishment of community health centres, training of local volunteers and health workers. The project also includes provision of tube water wells to improve access to safe water and initiatives to improve the socio-economic status of the disabled poor. The Leprosy Mission are partnering with a Bangladesh NGO, Health, Education and Economic Development (HEED).

Philippines : Water, Trees and Life for La Trinidad

The aim of the assignment is to implement an integrated community environment and development programme in the La Trinidad Municipality in Benguet Province . The initiative comprises a community organising and capacity building exercise, upgrading of water supply facilities, and watershed re-forestation and development.

Indonesia : Using Geothermal Heat for Small-Scale Agricultural Enterprises

Timeframe : November 2004 to December 2008

The assignment aims to determine the feasibility of using geothermal energy for small-scale agricultural use. Empower's counterpart for the project is the Indonesian NGO, Lembaga Tumbuh Alami, who have identified the need for this assignment through working with local farmers. If the feasibility proves successful, ADAF will fund the implementation phase of the project. The geothermal technology would be primarily used for incubation of chicken and duck eggs, and will assist poor farmers to improve their productivity and incomes.

China : Development of Small Holding Pasture, Guzngxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

Timeframe : September 2004 to February 2007

The goal is to improve the wellbeing of smallholders in selected karst limestone areas of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region by piloting smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable livelihood strategies that meet their basic needs. Smallholders in an initial four communities will be introduced to the Integrated Land Utilisation System approach and practices through participation in programmes.

Viet Nam : Poverty Impacts of Rural Electrification

Timeframe: February 2001 to November 2009

The goal of this assignment is to improve the identification, scoping, delivery and evaluation of sub-projects under rural electrification programmes in Viet Nam so that the poor benefit more directly. The objective is to provide a research based report and methodology that will be used for targeting current and future rural electrification programmes to assist in poverty reduction.
