Cambodia : Traffic Safety Education

Grantee : Educating New Zealand

Timeframe : February 2007 to December 2008

The goal of this project was to reduce the number of people killed and injured on Cambodia 's roads. The grantee, in partnership with Handicap Belgium , achieved this by increasing the road safety knowledge and skills of students in Grades 7-9 in four provinces in Cambodia ; increased the quantity and quality of road safety materials to support road safety education; and increased the quantity and improved the quality of the teaching of RSE to students.

Cambodia : Local Resources for Local Roads

Grantee : Fraser Thomas Ltd

Timeframe : January 2007 to July 2008

By establishing cost effective methods of pavement construction and by preparing standards, guidelines and capacity building measures which support the adoption of these methods this project, in partnership with the National Roading Board, aims to provide a reliable, cost effective infrastructure to allow the development of sustained livelihoods as a mainstay in the economy of rural Cambodia. Higher-strength pavements which deteriorate less after rains will decrease vehicle operating costs, supporting rural incomes.

Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Management

This project contributed to sustainable health and livelihood improvements for rural communities in Cambodia by enhancing and supporting the developmental impact of the existing World Vision Cambodia (WVC) Area Development Programme. Technical water and sanitation skills transfer and information sharing was integral to the assignment and improved the capability of WVC to provide high quality rural water supply and sanitation interventions in rural villages.

Myanmar : Smallholder Irrigation for Livelihoods Initiative

Grantee: International Development Enterprises (IDE)

Timeframe: September 2005 to September 2008

This assignment increased incomes and reduced the vulnerability of poor rural households across Myanmar by combining innovative and useful small-plot irrigation technologies (such as treadle pumps and micro-drips) with low-cost production and private sector distribution that assured widespread access and impact. The design of this initiative emerged from six months of successful pilot activities that were supported in part by the NZAID HOMF in Bangkok , Thailand.

Pakistan : Landhi Fertiliser and Energy Initiative

This assignment aimed to improve the economic and environmental conditions in the Landhi Cattle Colony, near Karachi , by demonstrating a waste to energy and fertiliser process by treating cattle dung, creating gas, and converting it to electricity, as well creating saleable by-produce including bagged, dry manure. A proposal for a large-scale waste to energy and fertiliser initiative, supported by the Asian Development Bank and other investors, is now awaiting approval by the UN as a Clean Development Mechanism activity.

Sri Lanka : Rural Community Water Supply and Sanitation

This assignment provided rural communities throughout Sri Lanka with increased access to safe water and adequate sanitation systems. It aimed to improve acceptance of Rain Water Harvesting (especially in areas where RWH represents the only viable source of safe drinking water); develop a user-oriented system of water quality testing to improve the safety and management of rural community water supply systems; and establish and incorporate lessons learnt from previous activities into a Community Based Organisation management of their water supply and sanitation facilities thereby ensuring sustainability of the systems.

Philippines : Strengthening Improved access to Land and Resources in Visayas and Mindanao

This assignment increased community access to, and control of, land and its resources by building the capacity of local communities, enhancing the organisational capability of farmers and farm workers, and providing support systems to peasants and other marginalized sectors. Local communities, community-based NGOs, and partner organisations received training on organisational and project development, paralegal formation, participatory governance (particularly local development planning and implementation), and local or national advocacy.

Philippines : Sustainable Tree Farming in Mindanao

This assignment aimed to improve the sustainable livelihoods of tree farming communities by increasing tree yields, wood quality and market opportunities. An integrated forestry services organisation for small-scale tree farmers (CFED) was established.

China : Community-Based Farming Systems, Yinchuan

In conjunction with the Yinchuan City Council, Performance Excellence aimed to implement and extend small-scale sustainable community-based pastoral farming systems for beef cattle and sheep. The objective was to empower the Liang Jian Township to implement sustainable sheep and beef cattle pastoral farms and convert land to productive pasture.

Cage Fish Culture

This assignment aimed to enhance the living standards and sustainable economic future of the poor inland fisher communities of Kerala, alleviating poverty through implementation of sustainable low-cost cage fish culture. Fisher self-help groups, including women's groups, were formed, and fishers were trained in sustainable cage fish culture methods and environmental monitoring.

Philippines : Pre-feasibility Studies on Energy Production from Biomass

This project was a pre-feasibility study relating to the provision of a biomass-fired power plant in Panukulan, Polillo Island . It involved producing a socio-economic survey to identify the concerns of the people of Panukulan; a report identifying potential livelihood applications for use of the electricity generated from the biomass power plant; and a report on the biomass resources available to generate power from the plant, including estimation of rice and coconut production, estimation of post harvest production, forecast of production trends, biomass properties and a preliminary transport and collection plan.

Viet Nam : Improving Maternal and Child Health

In this assignment, MSI Vietnam provided technical assistance to build the capacity of local, provincial and district health authorities in women's health, specifically maternal and newborn health, and to train a network of Traditional Birth Attendants and commune health workers. Community Initiatives for Health and Development

This assignment developed an integrated primary health care programme in the Moulvibazar Division of Bangladesh, focussing on the establishment of community health centres and the training of local volunteers and health workers. The project also included provision of tube water wells to improve access to safe water, and initiatives to improve the socio-economic status of the disabled poor. The Leprosy Mission partnered with a Bangladesh NGO, Health, Education and Economic Development (HEED).

Philippines : Water, Trees and Life for La Trinidad

The assignment implemented an integrated community environment and development programme in the La Trinidad Municipality in Benguet Province. Viet Nam : Flood Prevention and Preparedness

The aim of this assignment was to help fulfil basic needs and contribute to the sustainable livelihoods of the communities in Central Viet Nam by reducing the loss of life and property during flood events, through increasing their understanding of flood hazards and preparedness. This involved preparation of publicity materials for public awareness and preparedness campaigns on flood hazards; a pilot programme of public awareness and preparedness of flood hazards; a training seminar for 160 officials involved in flood and storm control on flood hazards; a study tour for three officials and an interpreter involved in flood and storm control; installation of flood warning towers and provision of relief equipment; installation of flood measuring posts and historical flood markers along with a set of preliminary food hazard and extent maps.

Indonesia :
Using Geothermal Heat for Small-Scale Agricultural Enterprises

Timeframe : November 2004 to December 2008

Empower and its counterpart, the Indonesian NGO Lembaga Tumbuh Alami, trialled the feasibility of using geothermal energy for small-scale agricultural purposes in order to assist poor farmers to improve their productivity and incomes. The project used geothermal heat for the incubation of chicken and duck eggs and to run a crop dryer.

: Development of Small Holding Pasture, Guzngxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

Timeframe : September 2004 to February 2008

This project improved the wellbeing of smallholders in selected karst limestone areas of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region by running a pilot scheme for smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable livelihood strategies that met their basic needs. Smallholders in four communities were introduced to the Integrated Land Utilisation System approach and practices through participation in programmes.

Viet Nam :
Poverty Impacts of Rural Electrification

Timeframe: February 2001 to November 2008

Empower Consultants worked with Viet Nam 's Institute of Sociology and Ministry of Industry to carry out a series of surveys of rural areas in order to permit better targeting of rural electrification programmes run by the Government of Viet Nam and the World Bank. The project improved understanding of the relationship between rural electrification and poverty reduction.
